You won't find a rooster or a chicken around here - in fact, we're
miles away from the nearest farm. But, that isn't stopping the folks
at the Chicago Barn Dance Company from bringing a taste of the old
folk town to this parish on the North Side of Chicago.
Although barn dancing is popular in rural areas, city goers are
lining up to learn how to promenade and dosido. From the line dances
and circular formations to the caller and the live band, this secret
society is the place to be on Mondays if you are looking to add
a little spice to your life. And even if you don't know your right
foot from your left foot, the caller is there to walk you through
the steps before the music begins.
Chicago Tribune columnist, Eric Zorn has been a fan of folk music
for many years and finds calling to be nostalgic.
This new crave has become so popular here that people come from
all over the Chicagoland area. I even got the chance to put my dancing
skills to the test.
To some people, barn dancing may be similar to square dancing
but there are obvious differences. In barn dancing, you aren't just
limited to four people but you get a chance to dance with several
partners.
This carefree environment welcomes beginners and advanced dancers
and prides itself on being a "no pressure zone." And what makes
this place even more inviting is - even if you miss a step, you
won't be voted off - because no one cares. This is all about having
fun.
This "open to the public" event doesn't require a membership fee
nor that you be a professional dancer - so if you think you can
dance, then grab your neighbor and come on down to this show down.
No matter how old or young you may be, the Chicago Barn Dance Company
guarantees you'll be swept off your feet the moment you step foot
in the door.
