Daly remarked, "It's time to give something back; to teach young people
the many lessons I've learned. To my viewers I thank you for your
trust, loyalty and friendship. To my colleagues, thank you for working
so hard to make me look good."
According to ABC 7 Chicago President and General Manager Emily Barr,"Joel
Daly is the embodiment of a true Renaissance man. Most people would
be content to rest on the laurels of being one of Chicago's most respected
journalists, but not Joel. He went back to school and diligently pursued
a law degree. In addition to his anchor and attorney hats, Joel is
a pilot, thespian and country and western singer. He never stops learning
and pushing himself to excel, and those attributes have made him an
invaluable member of the ABC 7 news team. We thank Joel for an unparalleled
38 years, we wish him continued success and lastly, we want him to
know, that he will truly be missed."
A Yale graduate, Daly joined ABC 7 Chicago in 1967. Early in his career,
he was teamed up with another famed Chicago broadcaster, Fahey Flynn.
Together they pioneered a unique reporting style that was copied around
the country. Since 1984, Daly has been co-anchoring the 4:00 p.m.
newscast alongside Linda Yu. For the past 20 years, (January, 1985)
that newscast has been the #1 newscast in its time period.
Jennifer Graves, ABC 7's Vice President & News Director, said "Joel's
been the heart of this newsroom for almost four decades. He's the
ultimate communicator and a truly gifted writer. It's been an honor
and delight to work with him."
Throughout his career Daly has been recognized with countless awards
and honors including five Chicago Emmy Awards from the National Academy
of Television Arts and Sciences and two Herman Kogan Awards from the
Chicago Bar Association, among others. In 2003, he entered an elite
group of Chicago broadcasters when the Academy inducted him into the
"Silver Circle." This prestigious honor is awarded for 25 years or
more of service in broadcasting and for outstanding contributions
to the industry.
Daly serves on the Board of Directors of the Clinic for Elderly and
Disabled, the Board of Directors of the International Academy of Dispute
Resolution and the Board of Managers of the Chicago Bar Association.
He is also a member of the Chicago National Academy of Television
Arts and Sciences.
Daly graduated magna cum laude from Yale University in 1956, earning
a B.A. degree in English. After 30 years he returned to school and
in 1988, graduated with honors from IIT-Chicago-Kent College of Law.
Daly, now a practicing trial lawyer, is a member of the Bar both in
Illinois and Wisconsin.
