EXTRA Information on the "All-American Girl" Players, Eleanor Dapkus and Bernice Metesch

These phenomenal women helped pave the way for future female baseball players. With each baseball game, these players not only made history, but they gave women a motivation for life, "outside of the kitchen".

The American Girls Professional Baseball League began during the WWII era because the men were away serving in the Army. Chicagoan Bill Wrigley conjured up the idea of women's baseball in 1942.

In the beginning, women used a smaller ball and played a fast-pitched softball game.

EXTRA Information on Aviva Kempner and
"The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg"

Aviva Kempner, Director of "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," took 12 years to make this movie. Inspired by family history and infamous world events, Ms. Kempner created a documentary that not only describes Hank Greenberg's life, but the lives of everyone affected by Anti-Semitism.

The movie itself is exactly what the title describes, but there is an underlying message. As Aviva Kempner puts it "it is all about being a good person." Keep an eye out for this documentary that may be playing at a theatre near you.

EXTRA Information on the Negro Baseball Little League

This Little League, begun in 1997, not only teaches the children how to play baseball, but it also gives the little leaguers an idea of the history of the original Negro Baseball Leagues. Each different team in the league represents one of the teams that existed in the past. For ten weeks through the summer months, it is a great way to combine education with fun activities like baseball. This program is available to children 9-12 years of age. They practice 2-3 times a week and compete on Saturdays.

EXTRA Information on the Schaumburg Flyers

When standing at Alexian Field, the air is filled with the sites and sounds of baseball, such as the smell of hotdogs, peanuts, and popcorn. It may not be Wrigley Field or Comiskey, but these baseball players and their staff sure know how to put on a show.

The Schaumburg Flyers baseball team is a part of the Northern League. Former White Sox slugger Ron Kittle is the Flyers Manager.

Next time you are thinking about baseball, consider suburban Schaumburg for one of the Flyers' home games. But be careful, because you may not be just a participant in the stands, but also one on the field.
