Chicago Samba (July 17, 2005)

At Pasha every Wednesday night, Chicago Samba transports you to the tropics and the band makes dancing irresistible!

“Chicago Samba I would say is the Brazilian connection in the Midwest. You know, the group exists for 16 years so a lot of the Brazilians come over here. You know, it’s just a little piece of home for them over here in Chicago,” said Moacyr Marchini, Chicago Samba.

“Brazil counts for half of South America in land and population. We try to cover all the styles from Brazilian music we try to do everything, but there’s so many. There’s so many cultures fusing together,” said Moacyr Marchini, Chicago Samba.

From the seductive sounds of the bossa-nova to the infamous carnival rhythms of the all-percussive batacuda, you get a tour of the entire country of Brazil in a single night’s show.

“The group is seven people and we have three dancers in costume who always come and do a show and our dance instructor, Edilson Lima, also he teaches samba steps and most of those styles from Brazil,” said Moacyr Marchini, Chicago Samba.

“It’s all about getting everybody totally involved with the cultural, involved with the music and have a lot of fun,” said Edilson Lima, Chicago Samba.

“I started taking lessons with Edilson about two years ago and I just fell in love with it,” said Hanna Walsh, Chicago Samba.

“If you have a booty and you don’t shake it, it doesn’t make any sense,” said Edilson Lima, Chicago Samba.

“All that I try to do is teach them the steps and make them feel comfortable with the steps and after 10, 15 minutes, everybody’s having a lot of fun and it’s about shaking, it’s all about having fun,” said Edilson Lima, Chicago Samba.

“Somehow when you wear feathers on your head, it’s so much easier to samba,” said Janet

“I took a trip down to Brazil last year and fell in love with the culture, I’ve always been a fan of the music and once I went and came back it was the only taste of Brazil I could get in Chicago,” said Bill Moore, Chicago Samba fan.

“I think people are going to discover us because we put a big show together and I hope they’re going to find out one day about us,” said Moacyr Marchini, Chicago Samba.
