Wacky Hamburger Spots (July 23, 2006)

What has happened to the hamburger recently? It is being updated and outfitted in a lot of different ways. Three places in Chicaago are doing something a little unusal to the hamburger.

Right off Chicago Avenue in the Ukrainian Village is Tommy's Rock and Roll Café. It is the only spot in the city where you can buy a burger and a guitar at the same time!

"It started with 40 guitars being at home so I had a restaurant and decided to make it a rock and roll café," said Tom Catalano, Tommy's Guitar And Café owner.

"We've sold guitars starting at seven o'clock in the morning and there's no one in the city who does that," said Tom Catalano, Jr., Tommy's Guitar And Café Chef, guitar tech.

The cafe sells new name brand guitars as wells as used and vintage guitars. While you browse through the wide selection of guitars you can enjoy a tasty burger with all the fixings. Customer favorites include the pizza burger and the meat-lovers burger topped with chicken slices and bacon. And if that isn't enough, they offer guitar lessons and repairs.

Hamburger Mary's, a popular gay-hamburger-chain based in San Francisco, just opened their first Chicago outpost in June, and their motto is simple.

"Eat, drink, and be Mary," said Ashley and Brandon Wright, Hamburger Mary's Twin owners.

That's right, from the décor to the food, it's all about Mary at this hamburger joint.

"On the menu it's carried into the Mary theme as well. We have the Cala-Mary, which is calamari, with Mary-nara sauce. The Mary-poppers-tini is served in a martini glass," said Brandon. "But then we have other cool things like Buffy the hamburger slayer, which is covered with garlic and red wine, which is pretty cool too."

Some servers even come equipped with performing arts skills.

"We got a few rare gems on our staff, some singers, some magicians," said Ashley.

Minnies, Chicago's first tiny-food-focused eatery, recently opened in May and everything is a small wonder -- from the burgers to the drinks!

"The concept of Minnie's is that you can mix and match all different types of miniature sandwiches. It's a fun place to be and to eat and drink," said Jonathan Segal, Minnie's proprietor.

There is a mini-bar at the restaurant where you can get a cocktail like a mini-martini. On Tuesdays they have mini-high tea.
