Extra Information on Lock & Dam 15
Until the 1900's there was a 14-mile stretch of River from LeClaire, Iowa to Rock Island, Illinois called the "Rock Island Rapids". These rapids were the most treacherous rapids on the Mississippi and the water was extremely shallow, making it very difficult for navigation. It was clear that some efforts were needed to tame the river.

The Corps of Engineers cleared and dredged this section of the river to make navigation easier. In addition, a 6' channel with a lock and lateral canal was created at LeClaire to bypass the rapids. However, as boats became modernized and were able to transport more goods, a deeper channel was needed.

In 1930, Congress authorized the nine-foot channel navigation project for the upper Mississippi, extending from St. Paul, Minnesota to St. Louis, Missouri. Due to the rapids, lock and dam #15 was the first dam built for the nine-foot channel. It is the only locks and dam with two-chambers side-by-side, one for commercial tows, and the other primarily for recreational craft.
