In
1978, Jim Peterik, and fellow
guitarist Frankie Sullivan, put the sophisticated melodic US rock group
Survivor together. They recruited vocalist Dave Bickler, and then eventually
expanded with the edition of Marc Doubray (drums) and Stephen Ellis
(bass). Survivor's biggest hit was the song 'Eye of the Tiger,' the
theme to the Rocky III film. The single, with its heavy drumbeat and
rousing chorus, became a worldwide number 1 hit, and is still a staple
of FM radio and various advertising campaigns. After their second album,
Caught in the Game, Bickler was fired and replaced by ex-Cobra vocalist
Jimi Jamison, which led to their third release, Vital Signs. This album
spawned two Top 10 hits with 'High on You,' and 'The Search is Over.'
Shortly after these successes, Survivor recorded 'Burning Heart' as
the theme song to Rocky IV in 1986. After the release of their next
album, When Seconds Count, which doesn't include 'Burning Heart,' the
group contracted to a three-piece nucleus of Jamison, Sullivan, and
Peterik. After they completed the album Too Hot To Sleep, the group
finally disbanded in 1989.
